In gratitude for the gift of poetry and the belief in the power of art to inform, educate, heal and touch the lives of others, Sylvia is an active volunteer in arts-related organizations. She became involved with the Border Voices Poetry project (www.bordervoices.com) at its inception in 1993, served as a volunteer for the Poetry Fair for 14 years and as an executive board member for a year. In 1998 she was a founding steering committee member of San Diego Writers’ Cooperative and coordinated their Third Annual Writing Contest. Other participation includes judge for Barnes and Noble High School Poetry Slam, Border Voices 2005 student anthology and volunteer at KSDS-FM, Jazz88 (www.jazz88online.org) for membership campaigns, Jazz Live, Wine Auction Fundraiser and the Guido Adler Jazz Piano Scholarship.
